BIOGRAPHY
Michael Floyd was raised in South Texas. He grew up alongside his two siblings in a small Texas town with a population of around 800 people. Theatre and film experience was hard to come by but at the age of thirteen he was cast in his first role, a chorus member in the musical OF THEE I SING. The acting bug got him and Michael began to devote his time to performing in as many plays as possible. He performed in a range of productions including THE KING STAG, THE MUSIC MAN, BURY THE DEAD and had an award-winning turn as Giles Corey in Arthur Miller's THE CRUCIBLE.
After high school, Michael attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. During his years at HSU, he performed in numerous productions. He received the university's Best Actor Award for his starring role as Elwood P. Dowd in HARVEY when he was only a freshman. He followed that role up with performances in HAROLD AND MAUDE, PICNIC and WINGS.
It was in his sophomore year that he began to work on his first play, POETZ CORNER. He directed it the next year, winning the award for Best Student Directed Production. That was when he discovered a true passion for the directing side of theatre. He then began taking on directing responsibilites. He continued to rack up awards in both acting and directing for productions such as WORKING: THE MUSICAL (Best Featured Actor in a Musical), MURDER BY NATURAL CAUSES (Best Show, Best Director), PROMETHEUS BOUND (Best Show, Best Director), BLITHE SPIRIT, and TRANSPOSING SHAKESPEARE (Best Actor, Abbie Award Nominee for Best Actor). He was also honored by the Hardin-Simmons University Theatre department with an Exemplary Service Award as well as the coveted Artist of Dionysus Award.
During his college years, he also became a member of the Abilene Actors Guild. Through his work with them he performed a self-written monologue for the production AMERICAN MONOLOGUES, a portrait of people affected by the tragedy of 9/11. He also performed in a production of THE LARAMIE PROJECT, for which the cast won a Best Ensemble Cast award. During this time, he was also president of the Zeta Theta Cast of Alpha Psi Omega, an Honorary Dramatic Fraternity. He also got his first taste of the film world with a small role in Matthew Graves' RIDING THE NINE as well as directing the student film ANT HILLS, which starred Ken Baumann ( TV's The Secret Life of An American Teenager).
After graduation from HSU where he earned a Bachelors in Theatre, he began to direct small productions in South Texas such as LITTLE OLD LADIES IN TENNIS SHOES, THE CURIOUS SAVAGE and the holiday classic YES VIRGINIA THERE IS A SANTA CLAUS. During a short stint in Odessa, Texas he performed in productions of HAMLET and ALL MY SONS with The Globe Theatre of The Great Southwest. He also had a small role in Midland Community Theatre's production of TAKE ME OUT.
Soon, Michael found himself living in Austin, Texas. After a short break from theatre, he was cast in the title role of OEDIPUS REX at a small underground theatre. He followed that role up with a lead role in TARTUFFE and supporting roles in HENRY V and RICHARD III. He also made his Austin directorial debut with Arthur Miller's semi-autobiographical classic AFTER THE FALL.
It was at this time that he and a few other artists got together to create THE CHAOTIC THEATRE COMPANY. He was heavily involved in their debut season, directing both A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and LYSISTRATA. After the first season, he left the company to concentrate on writing. He also took the time to perform in the world premiere of Elliot Conrad's short play MY THEOPHILUS, originating the role of Warren.
In late 2012, Michael and collaborator Brandi Dillon created Untitled Theatre Works, an artist-focused theatre company. The companies inaugural production was the horror/drama short DAHLIA, which Michael both wrote and directed. It premiered as part of the Frontera Fest Short Fringe Theatre Festival in Austin, TX in January 2013.
In his spare time he enjoys genre films, literature, painting, tarot cards, television and spending time with loved ones. He currently resides in Austin, Texas with his partner, Jessie.
